Hello everyone! I’ve chosen Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne as the subject of my first Read What You Hate to Write What You Love. If this is your first time hearing about this series, you can find an explanation here.
I’ve always loved the story of Journey to the Centre of the Earth from the time that I was very young. Movies, TV shows, cartoons, there were endless references to a secret world filled with dinosaurs and fantastic creatures. And, as you know, dinosaurs are a boy’s best friend.
However, when it came to reading the actual book, I lost interest quickly and never actually made it to the dinosaurs. Are there actually even dinosaurs in the book? Please, no spoilers.
Dinosaurs or not, that isn’t the point of this series. The point is to figure out why this writing has endured for so long. What did Verne do that made his writings classic? What can you learn from Verne? Love it or hate it, Journey to the Centre of the Earth has something that makes it great, and it can make your writing great as well.
